Useful resources

Below are some useful resources such as documentary recommendations and textbooks which are useful if you are wanting to do some of your own research to support your knowledge.

Textbooks

Cambridge IGCSE Textbook- suitable for course code 0976 & 0460

This textbook is endorsed & produced by Cambridge. It is ok, some aspects of the exams are not fully covered in the textbook, for example for the 7 mark questions in paper 1 then detailed examples are needed and the case studies in this textbook are brief and I feel lack the suffcient detail for those questions. There are example exam questions in the textbook and it will help students get a grasp of the subject.

Cambridge A Level Textbook- suitable for course code 9696

This is a good textbook which is easy to read and follow and contains good diagrams. It does lack practice exam questions and task activities in general. Some of the case studies are brief, but the general explanation is good. I would recommend combining this textbook with the Geography An Integrated Approach textbook by David Waugh.

Cambridge A Level: Geography An Integrated Approach by David Waugh

Better suited to students following Cambridge A Level course code- 9696. Quite possibly or literally the "bible" for A Level geographers. It focuses more on traditional geography but covers physical geography topics excellently and also population and urbanisation in detail and in a way that makes ithe content easy to understand. I have found this better and more suitable than current A Level textbooks. Hard to obtain but worth it.

ISBN: 978-1408504079

Edexcel IGCSE Textbook- suitable for course code 4GE1

This is an excellent textbook and I have been very impressed with the clarity of the information and excellent diagrams. There are practice exam style questions at the end of each topic and the level of detail is not too complicated. I have recommended this textbook to several students who have all benefitted from using it. The only issue is that it can chop and change between mini topics, but it is esy to use. Highly recommended for this course.

ISBN: 978-0435184834

The current Edexcel International A Level course unfortunately does not have any recommended official textbooks. However, it is very similar to the previous UK specification which was taught between 2008 to 2017. The textbooks for this older specification are hard to obtain and as the current international course is similar then these textbooks are useful, however there are some differences. It would be prudent to always cross reference with the course specification whilst using the textbooks below.

There are two textbooks which may be useful, but are hard to obtain:

Edexcel AS Geography Textbook Paperback – 2008 ISBN: 978-0340949290

Edexcel A2 Geography Textbook Paperback – 2009  ISBN: 978-0340949542

Documentaries

Earth The Power Of The Planet

This series presented by Dr Iain Stewart is very good to help with the understanding of plate tectonics (earthquakes & volcanoes), atmosphere, oceans (coasts), ice (glaciers) and the fragility of the planet. Ideal for A Level students studying coasts, water & carbon cycles, hazards and climate change. The animations and explanations are clear and this is a recommended series which I use to aid my teaching.

Also available in book format- ISBN: 978-0563539148

Rise Of The Continents

Another good series from Iain Stewart as he explores indepth the formation of the planet and the role of plate tectonics in shaping our planet.

British Isles A Natural History

This series is excellent especially the episode about Ice Age Britain, which explains the effects of the glaciers on the UK superbly. It also explores the geology of the British Isles. Recommended again for A Level students and also for GCSE especially if glaciation is being studied.

Also available in book format- ISBN: 978-0563521624

Andrew Marr's Megacities

This is a really good series hosted by the BBC's Andrew Marr as he visits London, Mexico City, Dhaka, Tokyo & Shanghai. He explores how the cities have grown and looks at the problems and solutions to urban challenges. Very useful for GCSE & A Level especially for the AQA A Level Urban Environments topic.

David Attenborough- Are We Changing Planet Earth?

This two part documentary explores how humans are affecting our planet and how we can solve the problems caused by our actions in relation to future climate change. Very useful especially for A Level students when covering the carbon cycle and for GCSE students studying climate change.

Useful Reading

Prisoners Of Geography- Tim Marshall

A really insightful read that explains the geopolitics of the modern world, very useful if you are studying superpowers for the current Edexcel A Level and the International Edexcel A Level. I would highly recommend this book, an excellent book that you will not want to put down.

ISBN: 978-1783961412

The Power Of Geography- Tim Marshall

The follow up to Prisoners Of Geography and also a very good read, again useful for the superpowers topic.

ISBN: 978-1783966028

Divided- Tim Marshall

This book clearly explains why countries are seeking to prevent movement of peoples and why future geopolitics is already shaping our world. Very good for globalisation and superpowers A Level topics.
